We are advocates.

Join a dedicated team, devoted to supporting and advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families! We act with and/or on behalf of an individual with IDD in the least intrusive, non-attorney manner, to resolve an issue, and/or to obtain needed support or service.

The Arc of Aurora changes lives. With knowledge, passion, commitment, and integrity, we work to improve the quality of community life for people with IDD. We are not residential or day program service providers and we do not run segregated schools — we do not offer, for instance, housing, transportation, or job coaching.

We are the folks people call when they feel like every other door has been closed and there are no more options. We help diverse individuals and families experiencing conflict and crisis, navigate through trauma, towards their goals. We help people get what they need when they need it. We are creative, communication-focused, and regularly seek resolution of issues with progressive solutions. Our motto is “We take our jobs seriously, but ourselves lightly!”.

Required Experience:

• Demonstrated commitment to justice for people with IDD.
• Bachelor’s degree with two years of experience in the field of I/DD or other relevant experience.
• Bilingual skills in both written and verbal communication (Spanish and English).
• Familiarity with the structure, role, and dynamics of voluntary and membership organizations.
• Ability to develop plans and goals, set priorities, and implement effective strategies.
• Demonstrated knowledge of:
• advocacy techniques, group dynamics/process, mediation, family dynamics, and systems
• laws and regulations affecting persons with disabilities and other I/DDs
• contemporary “state of the art” technology and programming
• Excellent public and interpersonal communication skills.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Detail-oriented and organized.
• Initiative-taking and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
• Proficiency with the technology necessary for the functions of the position, including demonstrated ability with email and Microsoft products.
