Director of Finance
The Director of Finance at Pinnacle Charter School is a key member of the Finance Team, working closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to ensure financial excellence across all school operations. This role is responsible for overseeing and optimizing the school’s accounting functions, including general ledger entries, reconciliations, and the supervision of the Accounts Payable & Receivable Specialist and Payroll & Purchasing Specialist. Additionally, the Director of Finance ensures compliance with financial policies, regulations, and procedures, fostering positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Reporting Relationship:
Reports to: Chief Finance Officer
Direct Reports: Accounts Payable & Receivable Specialist and Payroll & Purchasing Specialist
Compensation:
This is a full-time, 12-month position with a salary range of $100,000-$125,000 annually, dependent upon experience. A detailed outline of benefits and additional compensation is provided at the end of the job description.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management & Accounting:
- Lead and manage all accounting functions, including general ledger entries and monthly reconciliations.
- Maintain, update, and document accounting policies and procedures.
- Assist CFO with financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Update and manage asset tracking, including cost and depreciation, for use in government-wide financial statements.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB, federal, state, and local financial regulations.
- Prepare, review, and verify a variety of financial documents to meet internal deadlines, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
- Review accounting entries for financial activities, including correcting or adjusting entries as necessary.
- Analyze financial reports and records to identify trends, irregularities, and assess the overall reasonableness of revenue and expenditure data.
- Oversee the monthly and annual close processes ensuring that Pinnacle’s reporting and financial statements comply with US GAAP and the CDE’s Financial Policies and Procedures.
- Ensure effective internal controls and separation of duty including accounting software, purchasing software, and access to financial data.
Oversight of Payroll:
- Supervise payroll operations managed by the Payroll & Purchasing Specialist.
- Ensure payroll processes align with school policies, timelines, and compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with HR and the CFO to address payroll-related concerns and maintain accurate payroll records.
Oversight of Accounts Payable & Receivable:
- Supervise the Accounts Payable & Receivable Specialist.
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of payables and receivables.
- Monitor cash flow, manage vendor relationships, and ensure timely payments.
Grants Management:
- Monitor and track all school grants, ensuring proper allocation, usage, and reporting.
- Prepare and submit Requests for Funds (RFF) and ensure compliance with grant requirements.
- Responsible for meeting all grant reporting requirements and deadlines.
Bond Management:
- Make appropriate journal entries related to bond transactions each month.
- Manage quarterly financial submissions to DAC.
- Prepare and coordinate audit submissions and certification letters.
- Coordinate arbitrage rebate studies (every 5 years).
- Participate in bond rating reviews and bond refinancing, as necessary.
Compliance and Reporting:
- Ensure all financial operations adhere to federal, state, and local regulations.
- Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, annual reports to the DAC for bond compliance.
- Manage and update the Pinnacle Financial Transparency Site.
- Prepare the data pipeline file for annual financial results.
- File periodic reports with the state for Pinnacle Charter School and Pinnacle Building Corporation.
Other Responsibilities:
- Recruit, build and lead a high performing Finance team.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the school’s financial stability and success.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in finance or accounting, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role.
- Advanced understanding of financial principles, budgeting, and accounting practices.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, GASB, payroll processes, accounts payable/receivable, and grants management.
- Experience with bond management, compliance tasks, and asset tracking.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in accounting and payroll software programs; Abila MIP Fund Accounting and Paylocity, a plus.
- Skilled in use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
Working Conditions:
Exposure/Noise Level: Occasional exposure to airborne particles, fumes, and outdoor weather conditions. Normal school/office environment with moderate noise level.
Mental Functions: Analyze, collaboration, communicate, compare, compilation of data, compute, coordinate, copy, direct, evaluate, instruct, interpersonal skills, present, report, synthesize.
Physical Activities: O?ce environment including computer interface. Bend, reach, sit, stand, stoop, talk, walk, and heavy person-to-person interaction with students, parents, peers, and community members.
Weight and Force Demands: Moderate physical activity (lifting, pulling, and pushing up to 25 pounds).
Other: May be required to work outside of normal working hours and travel for work-related functions.
