Director of Philanthropy
Position Summary: The Director of Philanthropy position calls for significant experience in development, fundraising, and philanthropy. This position serves as the principal fundraising officer for the organization. This position is responsible for the oversight, planning, and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising program that secures the significant financial resources from individuals, foundations, corporations, and others to support Cat Care Society’s strategic plans.
Salary: $68,000-71,000 starting
Schedule: 40 hours/week, on-site
Reports To: Executive Director
Supervises: Director of Planned Giving and Marketing & Development Coordinator (shares supervision with Director of Communications and Engagement)
Role Responsibilities
- Develop, lead and evaluate a comprehensive and diversified fundraising plan that includes: one-time gifts, annual giving, monthly giving, tribute gifts, major gifts ($10k+), bequests, grants, corporate gifts and sponsorships, corporate matching, corporate charitable giving programs, workplace giving, peer-to-peer gifts, event sponsorships, in-kind donations, vehicle donations, gifts of non-cash assets, gifts of stocks, gifts from QCDs/IRAs, donor-advised funds gifts, and more — all in order to meet CCS’ annual revenue goals.
- Develop evaluative reports for tracking and management toward annual goals.
- Create individualized and strategic plans and measurable goals for identifying, soliciting, cultivating and stewardship of new and current donors. Create and implement a plan to engage the “next generation” of potential new donors.
- Meet regularly with donors. Host current and potential new donors for cultivation meetings and tours of the shelter.
- Collaborate frequently with the Director of Communications & Engagement to identify strategies and content for fundraising and donor engagement via website, social media, appeal letters, quarterly newsletters, and year-end Annual Report, including helping with edits and tracking budget and progress toward goals.
- Collaborate with Events Manager to ensure engagement and revenue is realized from events (Tails of the Painted Cats Gala, Paws on the Green Golf Tournament, Art from the Heart, etc). Build and promote event sponsorship menus including benefits.
- Collaborate with Events Manager to host cultivation events and educational seminars targeted at engaging donors throughout the year.
- Oversee departmental administrative systems related to fundraising, including data management, donation tracking, processes and procedures, reporting, gift processing/acknowledgement.
- Manage Network for Good donor database and any other databases or CRMs related to philanthropy.
- Ensure all donations are properly received, entered and tracked according to best practices.
- Ensure all donors/donations are properly acknowledged according to IRS guidelines.
- Ensure all donors/donations are properly recognized according to donor intent, wishes or requests.
- Manage relationships with Colorado Gives Foundation (Endowment & Colorado Gives Day), Community Shares (CCC, CFC, etc.), United Way, etc.
- Lead grant efforts, including overseeing a committee of volunteers, to identify, write and submit applications, and prepare and submit reports.
- Participate in key community events and organizations that may cultivate funding relationships or promote CCS. (e.g., West Metro Chamber of Commerce)
- Proactively survey and listen to the Board of Directors, Executive Director and other managers to understand the needs of the organization in order to understand where funds need to be raised and directed.
- Support Executive Director upon request with annual budget, audit and any other finance/revenue-related tasks.
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors as necessary and in the event of the Executive Director’s absence.
- Serve as the Staff Liaison to the Board of Directors Philanthropy Committee.
- Serve as the Lead Staff Member to the Future working group for the Strategic Plan. Support other Strategic Plan working groups as necessary.
- As part of the senior leadership team, may be asked to participate in human resource discussions and elevations.
- Train and mentor staff on best practices in philanthropy, stewardship and customer service.
- Oversee and develop volunteer roles related to philanthropy and fundraising efforts; often in conjunction with Director of Communications & Engagement.
- Current portfolio: Total fundraising revenue for FY23 was $2,111,482.08. Revenue streams include: individuals, major gifts, bequests, events, grants and others like vehicle donations.

Qualifications
- Passion for Cat Care Society’s vision, mission and values
- Outstanding oral, written and people skills
- Ability to work independently on a small fundraising team as well as collaboratively with other departments
- Discretion when dealing with confidential and highly sensitive donor information
- Strong strategic and analytical skills
- Excellent project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines and initiatives
- High degree of personal motivation, self-direction and detail-orientation
- Creative and strategic thinker with ability to proactively develop new ideas
- Strong technical abilities using Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Network for Good, video conferencing platforms and other similar technologies
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred (non-profit or related field)
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of non-profit fundraising
- At least 5 years related development experience, with progressive responsibility and a proven track record of soliciting, closing and stewarding major gifts in the $10,000+ range for annual/multi-year campaigns and experience converting new donors into major donors
- Proven success of raising at least $1M annually, either as an individual or team member
- Management and supervisory experience preferred
- Marketing and communications experience preferred
- Membership in professional associations such as AFP is a bonus
Working Conditions

- Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, animal bites and scratches
- May require long periods of standing
Schedule
- 40 hours/week, on-site
- Must be available to work weekends and occasional evenings
- Attending off-site continued education seminars or varying opportunities is required
