Development Assistant

Position Title: Bikes Together Development Assistant

Hours: Part-time, year round

Pay: $20-22/hour, 15-20 hours a week.

Schedule: Flexible: Tuesday – Saturday suggested. Remote/Hybrid

Purpose: Support a broader foundation of institutional fundraising so that Bikes Together can create accessible and equitable access to bicycles and education in Denver

Reports to: Executive Director

Bikes Together is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes equitable access to bikes and bike education through a variety of recycling and education programs and a social enterprise retail bike shop in Denver, Colorado since 2008.

Bikes Together is excited to meet our new Development Assistant! This person will be detail-oriented, organized, outgoing, and motivated to advance BT’s mission to make bicycle transportation, recreation and mechanics accessible to people who are usually excluded because of race, class, and/or gender. The Development Assistant will work closely with the Executive Director and Development Committee to strengthen and diversify fundraising efforts and support financial sustainability for the organization.

This is a part-time position (15-20 hours/week) and reports to the Executive Director, who is tasked with being the primary fundraiser for the organization.

Bikes Together is currently staffed by an Executive Director, full-time Operations Director, full-time Sales Manager, full-time Service Manager, full-time Programs Manager, full-time Refurbished Bike Mechanic, and 4 part-time Instructors and Mechanics. Current employees work as a team with an education and equity focus. The current Board of Directors includes long-time volunteers, mechanics, instructors, and community advocates, and is majority trans/women/intersex/genderqueer (TWIG) and 45% Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC).

Development Assistant Responsibilities

Assist the Executive Director in implementing a comprehensive development plan that will diversify and increase contributed revenue streams.

• Administrative (50%)
• Research possible grants, sponsorships, and fundraising partnerships, based on leads provided by the Executive Director and Development Committee
• Liaison with the Development Committee for meetings, agendas, projects, and priorities
• Collaborate on areas of improvement; identify, research, and propose solutions intended to increase the effectiveness of the overall development effort
• Draft proposals and correspondence for the Executive Director’s approval
• Assist with event planning and implementation, as needed
• Create and post development-related communications as needed (i.e. through Instagram, Facebook, printed materials, newsletter.)
• Individual fundraising: (30%)
• Create and implement a program of donor recognition and stewardship activities
• Assist the Executive Director in identifying and cultivating donor relationships
• Maintain donor and sponsor list and update the CRM database as needed
• Grant administration: (20%)
• Collaborate on documentation, including deadline schedules for applications and reports, a current list of submissions and reports pending, and other documentation as needed
• Assist with grant writing and reporting logistics as needed

Term:

The Development Assistant position will start October 15, 2024 and is budgeted through December 2025, with the opportunity to extend based on success in building the program.

Basic Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Required

• Flexibility, and a collaborative, positive, can-do attitude
• Enthusiasm for creating a welcoming, accessible bike culture consistent with Bikes Together’s mission and values
• Demonstrated organizational skills & attention to detail
• Interpersonal skills; the ability to interact with and relate well to others, ability to be collaborative, strong communication and customer service skills
• Capacity to learn essential development/fundraising practices, especially CRM and project management software
• Comfort working with a diverse pool of participants and volunteers (diverse in race, age, class, gender, sexual orientation, and ability)
• Writing and editing skills; demonstrated experience with Word, Excel, and GoogleDocs

Preferred

• Ability to organize and work with volunteers in ad hoc event committees
• Familiarity with social media tools and basic graphic design (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Instagram, Facebook, Constant Contact)
• Experience with event planning and implementation
• Grant writing experience
• Nonprofit development experience and/or familiarity with nonprofit funding
