Position Title: Bikes Together On Call Staff
Hours: On-call; shifts vary based on what is needed
Pay: $19-20/hour, $20-$21/hour for bilingual fluency (Spanish/English preferred)
Days: Tuesday – Saturday
Dates: Year Round as needed
Bikes Together is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes equitable access to bikes and bike education through a variety of recycling and education programs and a social enterprise retail shop. We’ve been operating in Denver, CO since 2008.
We are excited to meet our new on-call staff member! This opposition fills in as needed for staff absences at the social enterprise bike shop, helping customers and participants navigate bike shop sales, minor service repairs and programmatic options and creating an accessible bike shop.
Bikes Together is currently staffed by an Executive Director, full-time Operations Director, full-time Sales Manager, full-time Service Manager, full-time Programs Manager, full-time Refurbished Bike Mechanic, and 4 part-time Instructors and Mechanics. Current employees work as a team with an education and equity focus. The current Board of Directors includes long-time volunteers, mechanics, instructors, and community advocates, and is 80% women/intersex/gender diverse (TWIG) and 40% Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC).
Job Duties:
General Shop Responsibilities (10%)
- As the first point of contact for people visiting the shop:
- Greet customers, volunteers, and program participants who call or come by
- Answer general questions and direct people to appropriate staff or volunteers
- Help manage flow of people in the shop
- Ensure that participants complete all paperwork and program requirements
- Help volunteers and program participants conform to shop cultural norms (strive to be feminist, anti-racist, cross-class, and learning-focused) and navigate potential conflict
- Encourage visitors to collaborate and donate
- Promote & explain our education & recycling programs to visitors (stock fliers, update visible calendar, collect email addresses); *extra* welcome to people who are eligible for affinity- or identity-based programs like Gender Equality Mechanics
- Maintain clean & organized workspace, storage areas, and bathrooms
Retail Responsibilities (50%)
- Open and close the shop including opening and closing the register.
- Ensure accuracy and accountability of the cash drawer and safe by following appropriate procedures. Count, complete, and report daily sales receipts
- Sell used bikes ranging in price from $20-$900. Create welcoming and empowering experiences for wide range of customers
- Provide education about and help sell a wide range of bike components, accessories, and used parts
- Following direction from Sales Manager, help ensure retail, service, and bicycle refurb departments are thoughtfully and reliably stocked
- Assist Sales Manager with checking in weekly purchase orders for Retail, Service and Programs operations
- Maintain backstock; resupply retail space as needed
- Following direction from Sales manager, help to set pricing for retail bikes, new accessories, and used parts
Service Responsibilities (optional) (30%)
- Minor Service Repair (flat fixes, minor adjustments)
- Quote prices for repairs from Service Price Sheet
- Occasionally write-up Service Work Orders when Service Lead is not available
Mechanics Class Instruction (optional) (10%)
- Lead or fill in as a 4 – Part Mechanics Series instructor as needed
- Fill in for Learn & Repair programming and help teach people bike mechanics
Truck Runs & Transport (optional) (5%)
- Fill in when needed for truck driver absences: routinely transport bikes and inventory between Mariposa and Park Hill locations using the shop truck
- Load and drive scrap metal to local scrap yard
Preferred skills, qualifications, and experience:
- Enthusiasm for creating a welcoming, accessible bike culture
- Strong customer service skills and enthusiasm to get more people on bikes.
- Comfort in a sales environment; selling refurbished (fixed price) and as-is cost-flexible bikes to community members
- De-escalation and conflict management skills and ability to prioritize various tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Experience or ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultural identities, lived experiences, economic means
- Familiarity with Lightspeed and/or Google Suite preferred
- Bilingual preferred but not required (Spanish/English preferred, Arabic, Somali, French, Vietnamese)
- Previous bike shop experience, basic bike mechanic/maintenance skills, or interest in learning
